Yost Shifting with Guide Fingers

Yost Shifting with Guide Fingers

Emily plays these shifts two ways - first clearly sounding out the guide fingers, then without sounding them out.

Yost systematically wrote out most of the shifts that you are likely to use in standard repertoire in his book "Exercises for Change of Position".

Shifts can be practiced in a variety of tempos and with varying degrees of finger contact from harmonic touch to playing pressure. You can practice these shifts by first sounding out the guide finger clearly as a separate note, then reducing the time spent on the guide note so that it becomes inaudible.
