"Make sure that your elbow is free to move to the right while shifting up and to the left while shifting down. Try your octave jumps. Then try some one-string arpeggios. Check that you come far enough back when shifting down. Check the position of the left elbow."

One string, one finger sequences are a wonderful tool to develop shifting since we only need to concentrate on one variable at a time. Starting with the octave jump gives the arm an understanding of how far the arm needs to travel around the violin.

Enjoy the noise of the slides and concentrate on your shifting action, especially the fluid swing of the elbow around the violin and back again....
