Slide a finger along a string with a light touch, like playing an harmonic. This will help develop the fluid left arm and hand movement you need for shifting.

Start upbow, then the bowing and shifting actions are moving in and out at the same time.

Using harmonic touch will release any left-hand finger and thumb pressure, which will help free up the shifting movement.

Notice the movement of your left elbow around the violin.

This exercise is based on the ideas of Paul Rolland and Sheila Nelson.
