The lower-half bowstroke is primarily an upper-arm movement. Feel the upper arm swinging backwards on the down-bow and forwards on the up-bow.

Whereas we use flat bowhair for détaché in the middle and the upper half, we use the side of the hair when playing in the lower half.

Détaché is used less commonly in the lower half than in the middle or upper half. It is not as comfortable for fast strokes and is less straight than in the middle or upper half.

We practise the lower-half détaché mainly for its use in other strokes, for instance as part of the whole-bow stroke.
