Notice the use of the left thumb as a pivot for the both the upward and downward shift.

Sometimes we let the thumb lead in an upward shift, usually when a player is not using a shoulder rest and needs to negotiate the shift around the body of the violin, as shown here from 3rd position to 5th position.
