In the later etudes, Kreutzer indicates a few dynamic markings but especially in the early ones there are no markings for dynamics and very few for musical character. As always however, it is important to practice and play with musical intent and clear musical phrasing. Listen to how Emma chooses to make long crescendos as the notes go higher and long diminuendos as they drop lower.
Not all notes are equal, so work also on bringing out the important notes in each chord. For instance, in bar 4, the rising B, C, D give the music forward momentum and need extra resonance.
Kreutzer No.3 is a classic study for tone and clarity of the broad detache stroke. Check that your bowstroke is:
- straight enough
- has a good point of contact (remember that the point of contact needs to come closer to the bridge as you climb higher up the fingerboard)
- has a stable inclination of the hair. (It could be either flat or inclined but should not roll very much between the two during the stroke.)
Make sure that your bow-hair is in good condition and you have enough rosin on the bow.
