1st to 3rd Position Shifting

1st to 3rd Position Shifting

A basic principle of shifting is that we need to hear the note in our head before we shift to it. You could say that our aural map guides the finger to the correct note.

In this exercise you play both notes in 1st position before repeating them with a shift to 3rd position. This means you sound out the note before shifting to help develop your inner hearing.

Keep the bow moving through the shift to encourage free actions in both arms.
